A Drop in the Ocean

Ever looked out into the sea of people we call this world and felt like maybe you didn't make a difference?
Like you are alone in that crowd?

Well let me tell you.

3 people changed my attitude and even day this week.

1) After a hard and disappointing day at work I needed to go to Wal-Mart to get some groceries. The greeter looked at me a smiled. Of course I strained a smile back. This cute little old lady smiled even bigger and said, "You should always keep that smile, you are just a beautiful girl." -- I smiled and continued on my way.

2) I was trying to reach something on a self at Wal-Mart, but I'm super short so it sometimes makes it difficult. I was straining to reach and just couldn't, the frustration was building up. Quickly a young man MUCH taller than me reached the can. "I smiled and said, "Thank you, sorry I'm so short." And this man said to me, "You're very welcome but you shouldn't apologize for who you are."-- Yes, maybe he was trying to hit on me, but still, at that time it meant the world to me that he would just take time to help me.

3) Walking in to my grandpas senior home, I was walking just behind this old man who comes to visit his wife, he opened the door and could have easily gone in and the door closed before I got there, instead he paused, waited by the door, then when I got there he said, "beauty before age" and gave me that old man wink. -- Such a simple gesture that changed so much for me.

On a day when I was dealing heavily with emotional things, and other complicated problems when I was already frustrated and easily could have been miserable the rest of the day, it seemed as if the entire universe was working to make me a happier person. As said in a movie I saw this week, "Sometimes it seems as if all the forces of the universe combine together to create a miracle. Why? To save her? What would she become? We do not know. All we know is the battle between good and evil is not fought by wars but by one soul at a time."

So if you think you don't make a difference, you leave that mind set behind. You make a difference to me, to those around you, and to your family.
You could be part of someone else's miracle.

Your "Thoughts and Prayers" Are Bullshit.

Yes. I said it. I also thoroughly agree with that statement. Here's why. As I've been going through pretty huge and life-changing medical problems, my family has been physically nowhere near me. Granted my intestine decided to swell up in Saskatoon, which isn't convenient for anyone. It's given me so much time to think, in some scary and painful moments. Let me preface this by saying I'm not a religious person,  However from what I know, God, helped those in need, he didn't just pray for the sick,  he visited them, and he served them. Let's imagine that when that blind guy came to he Jesus, Jesus said, "You're in my thoughts and prayers" and then left. That story would have turned out very differently. We all do and say things in our lives almost out of habit. Like think of how many times you've said "Hey how are you?" and not actually listened for the answer. Lots, I know. I do this ALL the time, and I'm working incr...

Lessons From Environmental Issues: State Shift

I've been taking this Bio class called environmental issues, and to put it lightly, there's not a whole lot that I like about it. However I found something useful this week, maybe something that touched me more than it should have. There are different types of changes in the environment. For example: Resilience :  is the ability for the environment to bounce back after something drastic happens. Like a tornado, or a hurricane. Let's put this into people's lives, this is like a break up, or the ending of a friendship. It hurts, it even devastates you but give it time, all things will go back to it's natural state. However long that takes, it will heal. You will heal. Then.. There's a change called a state shift . This is uncommon in the environment, because of it's tragic and lasting effects. A state shift means no matter how hard the environment tries, it will never be how it was before, it's changed and can't be reversed. Now let's ...

6 Things I Learned from Dating the Wrong Person

Sometimes we get it wrong. We simply get it wrong. On occasion it's because we are too stubborn to admit we are wrong, other  times its because we just didn't know. But just because we got it wrong doesn't mean we have to stay in pain for the rest of our young lives. It doesn't mean our hearts will be shattered forever. You know that saying, the one everyone says when you break up? It goes a little like this, 'At least you learned something.... right? ' Gosh. Doesn't that phrase piss you off? Yes, it bothers me as well. It takes time, TONS of time before a glimmer can even happen. After dating a man for almost two years, and being alone for the past year, I have decided to try what they all say, and figure out what I learned. Here are the ramblings of a stressed out college girl piecing her life together. Lesson 1: Not all the time is it a 'me' problem.  A relationship takes two willing adults to make it function. No matter how hard you try,...
